Turnstile Murmurations transforms New York City infrastructure into a responsive light sculpture.
Echoing Marcel Duchamp’s readymade, the serial logic of Sol LeWitt, and the industrial luminescence of Dan Flavin, the work reclaims a turnstile — replacing mechanical rotation with illumination.
Ridership data from the 1/2/3, 4/5/6, and N/Q/R lines triggers pulses of light that swell and recede.
The result is a luminous tracing of the city’s circadian rhythm, mirroring our collective cycles of congestion and calm.
The work exists in dialogue with the rich history of public art within the New York transit system. Explore the works that define our subterranean landscape.
